During Columbus day weekend I decided to drive up to Colorado with my younger son  to enjoy the beautiful mountains and fall colors. We had the perfect weather and were enjoying ourselves.

We just left Telluride and I was merrily taking pictures of the golden Aspen trees, when I heard the unmistakable sounds of sport cars coming around a bend. I turned and saw a yellow and a black sport car whizzing by.

I could see immediately that the black car behind was a Bugatti Veyron, but I did not get a good look of the yellow car in front. We got back in the car and kept looking at the scenery, but I kept looking for the sport cars in pullouts and resting areas, as well. Ten minutes later, I spotted them just pulling in one of the resting areas. Being a car nut myself, my heart was racing as we parked our car next to them. The two gorgeous vehicles sparkled in the autumn sunshine. They looked absolutely perfect.

I approached them as the passengers got out of the car. Now I could see that the yellow car was a McLaren.

“Is this the 650 or the P1?” I asked.

“It’s a P1” answered the gentleman with a smile.

“Wow, I did not know that they were in production already. It must be difficult to get one, since these are extremely limited.”

“Yes, they are all sold out.”

At this point, the older gentleman driving the Bugatti joined us and asked me with a smile:

“Which do you like more?”

He looked really familiar to me, but I was mesmerized by the super cars and I could hardly think straight. I do love cars.

“Well,” I said.” The Bugatti Veyron has been around for quite some time now and the P1 is brand new hybrid supercar… Hang on a second, is that a regular Veyron or…?”

“No, it’s the Super Sport.”said the older gentleman with a big smile.

I realized now that I was looking at two super vehicles worth of ~$3.5 million 5 million sharing over 2200 bhp between them. We began chatting about cars and just in general stuff. They were all very nice, polite and curious about us.

“What do you think of adding some color to the Veyron’s fascia? It’s just too black.” he asked.

“I agree” I said. “It’s obvious that it’s a Bugatti because of the unmistakable horseshoe grill, but I would like to see the badge on it in red, as well, just to accentuate it.”

“Yes, yes.” We kept chatting happily about cars for a while. Then  I ask the older gentleman:

“Of all the cars you have, which is your favorite?”

“You have children, too. You know you cannot say which the favorite is. I suppose it depends, if I want to go really fast, I might choose one over the other. I really like the Bugatti, though, because I can drive it to California and I would be still relaxed and comfortable.”

“At least, you don’t have the diesel problem with this VW, right?”

“They are in a bit of a trouble, aren’t they?” he laughs with me. He really appreciates that he can talk about sport cars with me. He is clearly very passionate about his “children”. Then he asks me:

“Which super car would you have, if you had a choice?

“Hmm, I would like to see a LaFerrari and a Porsche 918 before I would make my mind up.”

“Oh yes, the Ferrari is a beauty.”

“I believe women and cars are the most beautiful things in life.” I replied.

He laughs with me with a twinkle in his eyes and I still cannot put a name to the familiar face.At this point, my son joins the conversation. Now, he is 13 and he likes dressing up in nice clothes. This is a picture of him 15 minutes before we met with the super cars. He did look snazzy.

He even had a silk handkerchief in his front pocket. He was definitely an attraction on the streets of Ouray and Telluride, and received compliments mostly from ladies.I can see that the older gentleman’s eyes lit up and asked my son:

“Is there a special occasion that you dressed up?”

“No, I just like wearing nice clothes.”

“I really like the way you look. I hope you will become a fashion designer.”

“Me, too” replies my son. At this moment I am rolling my eyes at him. “Is that so?”

Our older friend is really excited now and asks him:

“Really? Do you have a favorite designer or brand?”

“Oh, no. I just buy used clothes on eBay.” replied my son excitedly.

At this point, I swear I could hear cricket chirping in the background, as the silence was getting really awkward, so I decided to introduce myself.

“By the way, my name is Csaba”.

“I am Ralph… Ralph Lauren.” he gently shook my hand.

It’s not entirely clear to me of what happened in the next 15 minutes, because my brain was in a haze and I have no recollection of anything afterwards. We probably said our goodbyes  and got driving again. My face was on fire until Farmington, NM, which was about 2.5 hours away. But we made it home safely.

Well, Mr Lauren, I know that there’s very little chance that you will ever read a software developer’s blog post, nevertheless, here is my response to your first question of which car I prefer: the McLaren P1 or the Veyron SS. Before this occasion, I had not seen these vehicles in person. I only read magazine articles or watched videos about them on YouTube or Top Gear. Even though the McLaren has the latest hybrid technology with torque filling and all the electronic gadgetry, it somehow lacked something standing next to the Veyron SS. The pictures do not do justice to the Bugatti. It’s a big charismatic beautiful car. It also helps that it’s the fastest production car ever built. So my vote goes to the Veyron SS.

As for my son, I believe he is still in shock, but at least now he is looking for Ralph Lauren garments on eBay and desperately trying to get in touch with you. If he ever becomes a fashion designer and achieves a fraction of your success, I hope he can buy me one of these expensive toys, so I can enjoy the Colorado fall colors in my autumn years.
